Process

About our Process

Our architecture has been described as centering “people, place and poetry”. We believe that architecture should be generated by the physical, political and social context of a site to ensure it responds fully to the needs of the client and the city. It should represent, and expand upon, the spirit of the community and place in which it sits.

We do not believe architecture should be precious. It must evolve with the community it helps to form, becoming embedded and integral to its identity. We seek to use the process of design and building to add commercial, social and physical value whilst transforming a space into place.

0 Space

At the briefing stage we explore the client brief through the analysis of site, development opportunities and local planning policy.

Through this approach we establish a concept for the project, which we then develop through testing during the latter stages of our process.

1 Capacity

Through a series of building diagrams and models, we begin to explore the position, layout and mass of a building form for the site.

Our options will respond to the physical and political (planning policy) constraints of the locale.

At this stage we identify where social and commercial value can be added and begin informal discussions with the local authority.

2 Concept

Here we seek to reflect, distill and concentrate the existing character of the community and site in which our proposal will sit.

This is an important stage in establishing a sense of identity and ownership for the locale, whilst avoiding gentrification.

We continue to refine our models to distil an increasingly specific solution.

3 Consultation

Consultation is key to our design process.

At this stage we undertake a series of formal pre-application meetings with the planning authority and their review panels, as well as presentations and drop in sessions with key stakeholders, local groups and the wider community.

This process is a critical tool in ensuring the engagement of those most affected by the proposals.

4 Planning

The proposals can now be developed by integrating comments raised through the consultation process.

In addition, further comments are incorporated from the design team, planning authority and building control.

This helps ensure that proposals submitted are in line with local planning policy, contextually responsive, economically viable and deliverable for our client and the community.

5 Coordination

Once planning consent is granted we undertake a process of coordination, integrating the specialist’s information whilst ensuring the concept and aesthetic developed throughout the process remain uncompromised.

6 Detail

The next stage of the process involves the crafting of the project’s component parts.

For us it is critical that the initial concept of the overall design translates into the details to ensure the intent, aesthetic and functionality is not lost or compromised.

7 Delivery

Working with builders and clients we take a hands-on approach to the construction of the project.

This puts the focus on quality and ensures the project is delivered in accordance with the original client brief.

8 Place

Our work aims to deliver places that help communities to grow, manifesting the physical and social attributes of a locale.

Our involvement with our work extends beyond the completion of construction. We perform post-occupancy studies to feed lessons learnt into new projects.

We ensure that each bespoke project can be made more responsive to our client’s brief and those who live, work and engage with our architecture.

Commercial Solutions = Cultural Growth

pH+ seek to challenge, interpret, test and evolve architectural responses until an essential, appropriate and elegant solution is distilled. We work without ego or preconception to add maximum value for site, community and client irrespective of a projects size and sector.

We challenge clients to fully explore their brief to ensure the final solution is as tailored and crafted as possible, maximising the value in every decision. We help them to interpret and formulate their ideas to create an architecture that reflects their aspirations, and does not impose an idealised or generic response.

Working predominantly in areas of high density our work often requires us to address the city context and detail design simultaneously. We actively welcome and seek this approach, designing integrated shared spaces with a strong identity that encourage communities to form.

Working with local plans and specialist consultants, we help our clients to identify complimentary uses and brands, creating multi-purpose places in response to our ever-changing living and working patterns. These spaces are tested and distilled to maximize commercial, social and physical value for client, communities and context.
