Ranjith Ratnasingham, Shree Ghanapathy Temple
Cultural motifs adorn a contemporary two-storey extension to a temple in Wimbledon, the first consecrated Hindu venue in Europe. Originally constructed in 1981, the existing ad-hoc facilities only served a small congregation at first but today the temple welcomes over 5,000 devotees through its doors.
The 931m2 new purpose-built extension building will feature an impressive double-height atrium and a walkway informed by the religious procession that weaves through the interior and exterior of the building, defining the layout of the project. It will provide the temple with flexible spaces to accommodate a broad programme of community events, enabling the facility to cope with the pressures and demands of the 21st Century.
