A vacant plot on the corner of Douro Street and Fairfield Road is be transformed into a collection of interconnected brick and concrete blocks, with alcoves lined in golden cladding. The form of these three new-build family houses and six new-build apartments is drawn from the history of match-making in this former industrial heartland.
Further down Douro Street, the frontages of six dilapidated Victorian terraced houses that once accommodated the factory workers, are refurbished to their former glory. The rear of these homes are extended with large glazed openings that maximise the light into the previously dingy interiors and provide the living spaces with a connection to their gardens. A gap in the terrace is stitched with a new infill and a passageway to an additional courtyard property to the rear.
